TORONTO (AP) — The opening days of the Toronto International Film Festival saw a trio of tragicomedies combine humor with pain, often with mixed results.
It was a tale of two halves for the Jaguars, who fell to the Philadelphia Eagles 34-17 on Sunday.
The Jaguars started out strong and led 17-0 at halftime. Unfortunately, when the third quarter started, so did the demise of the Jaguars.
Let’s start in the first half where the Jaguars were looking like legitimate contenders in the league. Quarterback Chad Henne had led the team on two scoring drives along with Allen Hurns, who amassed four receptions for 110 yards and two touchdowns during the matchup.
On defense the Jaguars headed into the half with five sacks, two forced fumbles, two fumble recoveries and an interception.
After halftime, the whole feeling of the game changed. The Jaguars looked like a different team—they were protecting a lead instead of being aggressive toward securing a win.
On offense Henne looked like a quarterback who was afraid to make a play, and the running game was absolutely nonexistent, averaging 2.6 yards per carry.
The aggressive nature of the defense seemed to go away, and all of a sudden Nick Foles , LeSean McCoy and Darren Sproles took control of the game. Foles would go on to throw two touchdowns as the Eagles scored 34 unanswered points.
For the Jaguars, there were plenty of positives to take away from this matchup. As a rebuilding franchise it was good to see how much some players grew over the offseason.
Let’s take a look at how each position graded out in this Week 1 matchup.

Nick Foles ’ three first-half turnovers paved the way to a stunning 17-0 deficit, but the Eagles showed their resilience in the second half. A total team effort helped produce 34 unanswered points to send the Lincoln Financial Field crowd home happy. Philadelphia’s record improves to 1-0 on the season.
As for how the Eagles were able to mount such an impressive comeback, it’s really very simple as second-year head coach Chip Kelly explained to reporters during his postgame press conference.
The Eagles defense held Jaguars quarterback Chad Henne to 266 yards on 24-of-43 passing. Running back Toby Gerhart was limited to 42 yards on 18 carries. That inefficiency caused Jacksonville to convert on just two of 14 third downs.
Special teams had a crucial role to play as well. Defensive end Brandon Bair blocked a field goal. Four of Cody Parkey ’s six kickoffs went for a touchback. Donnie Jones punted six times, five of which were pinned inside Jacksonville’s 20-yard line.
Of course, the comeback never could’ve happened if Foles hadn ’t turned his afternoon around. That’s because Kelly apparently never considered turning to backup signal-caller Mark Sanchez.
After a horrid start, Foles wound up completing 27 of 45 pass attempts for 322 yards and two touchdowns. Foles connected with tight end Zach Ertz on a 25-yard seam route to cut the deficit to three, then hit wide receiver Jeremy Maclin on a broken coverage for a 68-yard go-ahead score.
Between Foles ’ turnaround and the strong defensive and special teams efforts, the Eagles wound up dominating the second half as expected.
While much of Foles ’ struggles were of his own accord, injuries along the offensive line didn ’t help matters. All-Pro left guard Evan Mathis and right tackle Allen Barbre both left the game during the second quarter and would not return. Early reports on both are somewhat optimistic, for what it’s worth.
Barbre is already starting in place of Lane Johnson, who is serving a four-game suspension, so the sooner he can return, the better. As for Mathis, it sounds like he’ll definitely miss some time, but perhaps it’s not a season-ending injury as initially feared—still, a huge blow for the offense either way.
How thin were the Eagles up front? With reserve lineman Matt Tobin inactive with an injury, and Dennis Kelly a healthy scratch, backup center David Molk wound up stepping in for Mathis.
Fortunately, the group—which also saw Andrew Gardner plugged in at right tackle—settled down and performed well in the second half. Had Philadelphia suffered just one more injury to the offensive line, the club would’ve been in a tough spot.
Ever the consummate teammate, Foles didn ’t blame the issues up front for his poor play.
There’s no denying Foles ’ outing was worrisome. The third-year signal-caller held on to the ball way too long. He was inaccurate. He didn ’t see wide-open receivers. He threw into coverage.
That being said, give some credit to Jacksonville’s defense for knocking him off of his game. Defensive ends Chris Clemons and Allen Branch were giving six-time Pro Bowl left tackle Jason Peters fits from the outset. The coverage down the field was tight until injuries to safety Johnathan Cyprien and linebacker Paul Posluszny forced the Jaguars to go to their bench.
That being said, it was an unsettling start for Foles to say the least.
Coming back to defeat a franchise that won 11 games over the previous three seasons combined and hasn ’t been to the playoffs since 2007 isn ’t exactly a miracle. Then again, it doesn ’t exactly occur every week, either.
All told, the Eagles should feel thankful to be at 1-0, but also confident that they can overcome such an awful first half and still wind up winning the game with ease. On the other hand, injuries to the offensive line all year offer another reason to feel concerned. If nothing else, it’s a situation to monitor.

It was not the case, though, and Serbia eventually drew level through a thumping Aleksandar Kolarov free-kick.
2 - France have lost only 2 of their last 16 games (W11 D3). Optimism.
Deschamps opted to make a number of changes to the side that beat Spain 1-0 at Stade de France just three days before. Cabella , Bacary Sagna , Jeremy Mathieu, Lucas Digne , Morgan Schneiderlin , Yohan Cabaye and Loic Remy were all handed starting berths for Les Tricolores .
Initially, that seemed to work, with Pogba bagging the early goal and France creating some decent chances going forward. A host of second-half changes, particularly to the front line, killed the team’s momentum though, and the hosts managed to salvage a draw towards the end.
Although the result appears to be a step backwards in comparison to the victory over Spain a few days before, there were some major positives to take from the draw.
Two of the most impressive French players on the night were Cabella and Schneiderlin .
Cabella , a summer signing for Newcastle United, was making his full France debut, while Schneiderlin started the goalless draw with Ecuador at the FIFA World Cup in Brazil earlier this summer. Both were excellent, despite the difficulties faced by Les Bleus ’ stars on the patchy Partizan Stadium turf.
Given a rare chance to impress from the start with a host of regular starting attacking talents—such as Karim Benzema and Mathieu Valbuena —rested, Cabella seized it with both hands and put in a good performance. The Newcastle man was often a threat going forward and showed with his assist for the goal from a corner, and on a number of occasions, that he can step up for this team when Valbuena is unavailable.

Admittedly, the 24-year-old has not yet proven that he can consistently yield the same creativity that the pint-sized Dynamo Moscow man does, but he showed that he can make an impact in Valbuena ’s absence. His strong showing also suggests that he is now well and truly a part of Deschamps ’ plans and can look forward to getting a number of chances to add to his international experience in order to rival Valbuena for a starting spot at Euro 2016.
Schneiderlin also did his hopes of future inclusion no harm at all. The Southampton man started instead of Paris Saint-Germain’s Blaise Matuidi , with Deschamps sticking with the 4-2-3-1 shape he tried against Spain instead of the 4-3-3 exhibited during this summer’s World Cup.
Although the formation is not likely to stick, Schneiderlin could become a more regular feature in the French starting XI once Deschamps switches back to a 4-3-3.
The 24-year-old, despite starting instead of Matuidi , is now a major contender to usurp PSG ’s Cabaye before Euro 2016. The France No. 4 does not play enough for the French champions and rarely impresses when he is in action for Laurent Blanc’s side, while Schneiderlin is constantly impressing in the English Premier League with Southampton and is now starting to stake his claims for a regular starting place.
Les Bleus ’ No. 22 exhibited excellent long-range passing skills during the game, something that Cabaye has excelled at in the past with Newcastle but is not required to do as much with PSG , while also matching the 28-year-old’s combative style of play. With the former Geordie favourite not likely to break into the French champions’ starting XI anytime soon, his starting role is now there for the taking.
Maintaining his current good form at club level will ensure that Schneiderlin continues to get chances at the international level under Deschamps ’ leadership. It is up to him to seize them and make the starting place his own before the Euros.
Based on their performances in Belgrade, both Cabella and Schneiderlin could be playing big parts in the hosts’ search for glory on home soil come 2016.
